ICOMOS Launches PUBLICOMOS: Your Global Resource on Heritage Conservation

– Published: 3 February 2025

ICOMOS is pleased to announce the launch of PUBLICOMOS, a comprehensive and collaborative platform that integrates printed and digital cultural heritage documentation into a single website.

Displayed in English, French, and Spanish, PUBLICOMOS includes documents in over 50 languages and a comprehensive catalogue of ICOMOS publications since its establishment in 1965.

An Extensive Catalogue of Cultural Heritage References

PUBLICOMOS is designed to offer an intuitive browsing experience, catering to both ICOMOS members and heritage enthusiasts. It provides access to 15,000 references, with over 2,000 full texts available in Open Access. The platform features peer-reviewed contributions on cultural heritage referencing over 200 countries and territories in the world.

So far, PUBLICOMOS features:

  • 2900 full books
  • 3900 book chapters
  • 3800 journal articles
  • 1600 conference items (articles and full proceedings)
  • 200 doctrinal texts in 40+ languages

Personalised Search Options and Contributions

The platform enables users to browse its catalogue through a range of search options. The homepage includes a simple search bar that produces immediate results, whereas the advanced search form can be used to make more precise searches using titles, authors, dates and other fields. A standout feature included within this search option is the ability to locate documents by monuments, countries, or heritage figures mentioned within them. The thematic search offers an alternative approach, allowing users to browse the ICOMOS catalogue by heritage and conservation topics, curated by the ICOMOS Documentation Centre. 43 topics are currently available, dealing with various heritage types, materials and engineering techniques, social sciences, risk, disasters and heritage management issues.
PUBLICOMOS also provides direct access to specific materials through shortcuts leading to ICOMOS charters and other doctrinal texts, collections, conference proceedings, and webinars, as well as journal issues and latest additions to the catalogue.

Users can create an account on the platform to bookmark their favourite references and to save their searches and selections to build a bibliography over several sessions.

Last but not least, users with an account can also directly contribute to the enrichment of the catalogue through the submission form included within the platform. All contributions on the conservation and restoration of cultural heritage are welcome, provided that they have been peer-reviewed and are available for Open Access distribution.

ICOMOS invites cultural heritage professionals and enthusiasts to use PUBLICOMOS for streamlined and integrated searches of cultural heritage publications, and to enrich the platform by sharing their own contributions.
