Wait, what?! Why is there an international climate conference in the Amazon?

Why would world leaders fly thousands of kilometres to the heart of the Amazon for a climate conference? In this episode of Wait, what?!, we head to Belém, Brazil—host city of the 30th  Conference of the Parties (COP30)—to explore why the world’s largest rainforest is taking centre stage in global climate talks.

Once at the heart of the rubber boom, Belém now finds itself at the centre of the world’s climate crossroads. With scientists, Indigenous youth and riverside communities already preparing for 2025, this isn’t just another COP—it’s a chance to listen to those on the frontlines of deforestation and climate resilience.

Deforestation, fires and development are pushing the ecosystem closer to an irreversible tipping point. So, what does holding COP30 here mean for action? And can it lead to decisions that move beyond pledges to real solutions?
