INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE – Migrant Histories and Heritage Making

“Greek-Australian Women and Building Alternative Multiculturalisms: Grassroots Histories of Migrant Welfare in NSW, 1960s-1980s”

This research aims to build a fuller picture of early multiculturalism from the perspective of women, including those who worked at the ‘frontlines’ of migrant welfare and service provision for Greek and other ethnic-minority communities in NSW from the 1960s to the 1980s.

Did you work or volunteer for any ethnic community organisations (including ones that provided welfare support to migrant communities in Sydney)? Have you participated in community discussions around migrant service provision (child-care, unemployment support, women’s support services)? Do you remember the Social Security Scandal? Would you be willing to sit down with me and talk about your experiences?

What’s involved

  • An audio-recorded one-on-one interview of no more than 1.5 hours, in a location in which you feel most comfortable.
  • You will be asked a series of closed and opened ended questions regarding your life story, with particular attention paid to your memories of community politics, social welfare activism/advocacy, and service provision to migrant communities in the 1960s-1980s, and your experiences working or volunteering as part of an ethnic community organisation and/or in an activist/advocacy capacity.
  • The recorded interviews are expected to be conducted in-person across June-August 2022, though we may have unrecorded conversations in the month preceding.
  • The recordings may form part of the Greek-Australian Archive, to be held at the State Library of NSW.
  • You are free to choose which questions to answer; and the recorder can be turned off at any time, if requested.

Benefits:

Participants will have an opportunity to contribute to the literature around histories of migration, settlement and multiculturalism in Sydney and Australia. The project hopes to expand the reach of community memories, and foster a broader understanding of this period and the work of community groups in securing better living standards and services for ethnic minority groups.
