From predator hunting contests to bioblitz competitions, many people participate in games with wildlife as the main component. Some can cause population declines, shifts in wildlife behavior, an increase in disease, and promote fear or public misunderstanding of unfairly maligned species. But others may also help to limit the spread of invasive species or improve public education about ecology and support for wildlife management projects. In the May/June issue of The Wildlife Professional, we explore these different contests and the challenges as well as solutions they provide for wildlife conservation and management.
Our special focus for this issue taps into nutritional wildlife ecology, a discipline in the wildlife field that includes knowledge about what an animal is eating, how its metabolism works and its energy requirements. This information can provide insightful clues into how a population is doing.
