4 ways to care for your trees this March | Colorado State Forest Service

Spring is on its way. Gardners are starting seeds for their gardens, students (and teachers!) are planning spring break activities and cyclists are tuning up their bikes. Colorado residents may be asking, “What can I do to help the trees in my yard?”

Our urban and community foresters know that this is a crucial time of year for tree health. They offer these tips to create a healthy future for your trees.

  1. Water your trees – This winter has been pretty dry in much of Colorado, so giving your trees a drink will help them remain in top health. Remember to water when it’s warm, water a wide area, water slowly and use mulch. Learn how to water trees in the winter.
  2. Find an ISA-certified arborist – A skilled, reliable arborist can take care of the trees in your yard in a safe, knowledgeable way. An ISA-certified arborist will help you maintain your tree, including pruning or treating for insects or disease.
  3. Prune your trees – Pruning your trees in the late dormant season gives you two advantages: it’s easier to spot problem areas and you can maximize growth in the growing season. Just follow these key tree pruning tips, and remember: large/mature trees should be pruned by a certified arborist.
  4. Decide on new trees to plant in April or May – Late April is usually the ideal time to plant trees along the Front Range and for much of Colorado. The Colorado Tree Coalition has many resources to help you find the right tree for your property.
