State of the Everglades Spring 2025

As we reflect on the progress and challenges of 2025, I’m reminded once again of the strength and dedication of the Everglades community—our partners, members, volunteers, and advocates. From reaching out to elected officials during the legislative session and showing up in force for Everglades Action Day, to attending the 40th annual Everglades Coalition Conference and reporting sightings of banded Roseate Spoonbills—your actions are making a difference every day.

This year, we also recognize two champions of the Everglades whose legacies have helped shape the course of restoration: Dr. Jerry Lorenz, who retired this spring after more than 30 years dedicated to studying Florida Bay and protecting the River of Grass; and Charles Lee, whose tireless work over five decades recently earned him a place in the Everglades Coalition Hall of Fame alongside greats like Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Nathaniel Reed, and Mary Barley. We are lucky to work alongside these legends and count them as part of our Audubon family.

Sincerely,
Kelly Cox, Director of Everglades Policy
