How Dream Reports Are Collected In A Laboratory
Everything known about dreaming rests on verbal reports gathered after waking, and the procedures used to collect them shape the findings more than most readers assume.

Dream science has one raw material: what a person says on waking. The methods used to collect those statements determine what the field can and cannot claim.
The basic procedure
A participant sleeps with electrodes recording brain activity, eye movement and muscle tone. At a chosen point the experimenter wakes them and asks an open question about what was passing through their mind.
The question is deliberately neutral. Asking whether someone was dreaming invites a yes or no shaped by their own definition, so the standard prompt asks what was happening rather than whether it counted.
The report is recorded immediately, usually spoken rather than written, because the material decays within seconds and any delay costs detail that cannot be recovered afterwards.
Why timing of the waking is the design
Waking someone from dreaming sleep yields long, vivid reports far more often than waking them from deep non-dreaming sleep. Choosing when to wake is therefore choosing what kind of data will be produced.
Studies interested in comparing stages wake participants across the night at different points, which is demanding for both parties and limits how many nights any individual will tolerate.
Studies interested in content alone often wake late in the night, when reports are longest, but that choice builds a bias towards the particular character of early-morning dreaming.
What the laboratory changes
Sleeping wired up in an unfamiliar room alters sleep itself. The first night in a laboratory is typically worse and is often discarded, a convention known as the adaptation night.
Content shifts too. Laboratory dreams contain fewer of the intense or embarrassing episodes people describe at home, and references to the laboratory itself appear in a noticeable minority of reports.
Knowing one may be woken and questioned is not a neutral condition, and there is no way to remove it without giving up the control that makes the setting valuable.
Turning speech into data
A spoken report is not yet a measurement. It has to be transcribed and then coded, with trained raters marking the presence of characters, settings, actions, emotions and interactions according to a fixed scheme.
Two raters usually work independently on the same material so their agreement can be checked. Where they diverge systematically, the coding rules rather than the dreams are treated as the problem.
This machinery exists because impressionistic reading of dream reports produces whatever the reader expected. Formal coding does not remove interpretation but makes it visible and countable.
The gap that cannot be closed
No procedure gives access to the dream. It gives access to a memory of a dream, filtered through language, told to a stranger, some seconds after the event.
Everything about narration applies. People tidy sequences into stories, supply connective tissue that may not have been present, and omit what they cannot put into words.
Researchers work with this rather than around it, treating reports as evidence of a good but imperfect kind. Claims that outrun what a report can support are where the field usually goes wrong.
