How Long A Minute Lasts In A Dream
Eye-movement signaling let researchers time dreamed intervals against the recording clock, and dreamed time turns out to run close to real time rather than compressing.

Dreams are often said to compress hours into seconds. Lucid dreaming provided the first way to test that directly, and the answer is that dreamed time runs roughly at real speed.
The signaling method
Eye muscles are not paralyzed during REM sleep, so a lucid dreamer can move their eyes in a prearranged pattern that appears in the recording.
That gives a channel from inside the dream to the outside world while sleep continues, which is what makes any timing experiment possible.
A dreamer signals at the start of an interval, counts or performs a task, and signals again, allowing the dreamed interval to be measured against a clock.
What the timing shows
Estimated intervals in dreams correspond closely to real elapsed time, with dreamed counting taking approximately as long as counting while awake.
Tasks involving movement tend to take somewhat longer in the dream than the same task performed awake, a finding that also appears in waking motor imagery.
The overall picture is of dream time running at a similar rate to waking time rather than compressing, which contradicts the popular assumption directly.
Why dreams still feel time-distorted
Dream narratives skip, with the dreamer suddenly in a new setting and accepting that events have occurred in between without experiencing them.
On waking, that skipped material is reconstructed as elapsed time, which makes a short dream feel like a long story.
Memory for dreams is also fragmentary, so what is recalled is a set of scenes whose durations are inferred rather than remembered.
The limits of the measurement
Only intervals a lucid dreamer can deliberately mark are measurable, which excludes ordinary non-lucid dreams entirely.
The act of counting and signaling structures the dream, so what is measured may be a special case rather than dreaming in general.
Participants are experienced lucid dreamers with an unusual degree of control, and generalizing from them to all dreaming requires caution.
Why the technique mattered beyond timing
Eye signaling was the development that made lucid dreaming a laboratory subject, since it provided objective confirmation that a sleeping person was aware.
Once a channel existed, questions previously restricted to introspection became answerable, including timing, dreamed movement and even simple communication into a dream.
The timing result is a good example of what that channel is for: a widely believed claim about dreaming turned out to be testable and turned out to be wrong.
