How Screens And Games Enter Dream Content
Repetitive visual tasks and immersive games show up in dreams in characteristic ways, and the pattern has been used to test how waking experience is incorporated at all.

People who spend hours on a repetitive visual task often see it again as they fall asleep or in dreams that night. The effect has become a standard tool for studying incorporation.
The falling-block effect
Playing a simple, highly repetitive puzzle game for an extended period reliably produces imagery of the game during sleep onset in a large share of players.
The imagery is fragmentary rather than narrative. Players report shapes and movements, not a story about themselves playing.
What made the finding useful is that it was reproduced in people with severe amnesia who could not remember having played, which separates the imagery from conscious recall of the source.
What immersive games contribute
Games with rich environments and an avatar produce a different pattern from puzzle games, and frequent players report dreams containing game spaces and mechanics.
Some players describe a sense of control over dream events resembling control of a character, which has drawn attention from lucid dreaming researchers.
Whether gaming increases lucidity or whether people prone to lucidity are drawn to games is not settled, and the correlational designs used so far cannot separate the two.
Incorporation is selective
Dreams do not replay the day. Elements from waking life appear detached from their original context and recombined with unrelated material.
Emotionally significant experience is incorporated more readily than neutral experience, which is why an argument reappears more often than an afternoon of routine work.
Reading and watching are incorporated less than doing. Activities involving movement and spatial navigation seem to enter dream content more readily than passive viewing.
Why the timing matters
Material from the previous day appears in dreams, and material from about a week earlier appears at an elevated rate as well, a pattern researchers describe as delayed incorporation.
The two-phase timing has been used to argue that dreaming reflects a memory consolidation process operating over days rather than a single night.
Screen-based tasks are convenient for testing this because exposure can be measured precisely, unlike most life events people are asked to recall.
What the research does not show
Nothing in this literature establishes that screens degrade sleep quality by way of dream content, and the incorporation effect is not itself a harm.
Nor does it support the reverse claim that gaming trains useful dream skills, which remains an assertion made in enthusiast communities rather than a demonstrated result.
What it does support is narrower and more valuable: waking experience enters dreams by rules that can be measured, and repetitive tasks make those rules visible.
