Do lucid dreaming masks and apps actually work?
The idea is sound and the execution is the problem. Detecting REM reliably from a consumer device is harder than the marketing implies, and the cue has to arrive without waking you.

The logic behind lucid dreaming devices is straightforward and was validated decades ago. If a sleeper can be given a signal during REM that is strong enough to be incorporated into the dream but not strong enough to wake them, and if they have been trained to recognise that signal as an indicator that they are dreaming, lucidity should follow.
Stephen LaBerge's laboratory demonstrated the principle with the DreamLight and later the NovaDreamer, which detected eye movements and flashed lights through closed eyelids. Participants reported the lights appearing in their dreams — as flickering, as a strobe, as an inexplicable pulse — and using them as a cue.
The principle works. The engineering is where it falls down.
The two hard problems
Detecting REM accurately. Laboratory polysomnography uses EEG, electro-oculography and electromyography. Consumer devices typically use movement — an accelerometer on the wrist or under the mattress — and sometimes heart rate.
Movement-based sleep staging is reasonable at distinguishing sleep from wake and poor at distinguishing stages. REM detection specifically is unreliable, which means cues are frequently delivered during the wrong stage. A cue in slow-wave sleep does nothing useful; a cue in light sleep wakes you.
Masks with electro-oculography sensors do better in principle, and consumer implementations vary considerably in quality.
Calibrating cue intensity. The window between too weak to be noticed and strong enough to wake is narrow, varies between people, varies across the night, and varies with how deeply the person is in REM at that moment. Devices that adapt intensity based on response do better than fixed ones.
The largest study of a consumer lucid dreaming device — Denholm Aspy's group testing a light-and-sound mask against a placebo condition — found no significant effect of the device itself. Lucid dream frequency increased in participants overall, and the increase was attributable to the accompanying practices: keeping a dream journal, doing reality checks, and simply paying attention to dreams. The mask added nothing detectable.
What that result means
Not that external cueing cannot work — LaBerge's laboratory results stand, and were obtained with better REM detection and careful individual calibration.
It means that the consumer implementation has not solved the detection and calibration problems, and that the psychological components bundled with these products are doing the work. Buying a mask and using it conscientiously does increase lucid dreams, because using it conscientiously involves a nightly routine of intention-setting, dream recall and reality testing.
Which is what the free techniques consist of.
Apps
Phone applications face a worse version of the same problem. A phone on the mattress detecting movement is a very coarse instrument, and audio cues from a phone speaker are hard to calibrate.
Where apps are useful, it is for the non-detection functions: dream journalling, which reliably increases recall and is the foundation of everything; reality-check reminders during the day; and alarms timed for a wake back to bed schedule.
Those are genuinely helpful. They are also not what the marketing emphasises.
Supplements, and a warning
Galantamine, an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor licensed for Alzheimer's disease, is the substance most associated with lucid dreaming in enthusiast communities. There is a study — LaBerge and colleagues, 2018 — reporting a substantial dose-dependent increase in lucid dreams when taken during a wake back to bed.
The mechanism is plausible: acetylcholine is elevated during REM, and inhibiting its breakdown intensifies REM.
The cautions are serious and under-stated in the communities that use it. Galantamine is a prescription medicine with cardiac effects — bradycardia, and risk of syncope — gastrointestinal effects, and interactions. It is contraindicated in asthma, in bradyarrhythmias and in several other conditions. Taking a cholinergic drug obtained without prescription for recreational purposes is not a small decision.
It also markedly increases sleep paralysis, which several users find deeply unpleasant.
What to spend your effort on instead
The evidence supports a short and unglamorous list.
Keep a dream journal. Non-negotiable, free, and the strongest single predictor of progress. Recall must come before lucidity — you cannot notice you are dreaming if you cannot remember dreaming.
Do reality checks properly. Not mechanically. Each check should involve genuinely questioning whether this is a dream and looking for evidence, which is what makes it transfer.
Use wake back to bed. The strongest manipulation available, and it costs nothing.
Practise MILD on returning to sleep — the prospective-memory rehearsal.
Get enough sleep generally. REM is concentrated in the last part of the night, and people who sleep six hours are cutting off most of the territory where lucid dreams happen.
A device may still be worth buying if the ritual of putting it on helps you maintain the practice. That is a legitimate reason. It is just not the reason on the box.
