Practicing A Skill Inside A Lucid Dream
Athletes and musicians have reported rehearsing movements in lucid dreams, and the small studies examining the claim leave the practical value considerably less settled than enthusiasts suggest.

One of the most repeated claims about lucid dreaming is that a skill can be rehearsed while asleep with real transfer to waking performance. The claim has been examined, and the results are modest.
Where the idea comes from
Mental rehearsal without movement improves performance on motor tasks, an effect established well before anyone applied it to dreaming.
Brain imaging shows overlapping activity when a movement is imagined and when it is performed, which supplies a mechanism for the waking version.
If dreamed movement engages similar systems, the reasoning goes, then a lucid dreamer with control over the scene has an unusually vivid rehearsal environment.
What has been measured
Studies have asked lucid dreamers to perform simple timed movements in a dream while signaling with prearranged eye movements, which allows the dreamed action to be located in the recording.
Muscle activity and breathing changes have been detected corresponding to dreamed exertion, indicating that dreamed movement is not entirely disconnected from the body.
Small studies comparing dreamed practice against waking practice on simple tasks have reported improvements from dreamed practice, though sample sizes are very small.
The practical obstacles
Lucid dreams are infrequent for most people, so the total amount of practice available is negligible compared with waking training.
Dream scenes are unstable and control is partial, so a rehearsal attempt frequently becomes something else before it can be repeated.
Dreamed physics does not reliably match real physics, which matters for any skill where the feedback from the movement is what is being learned.
Why the evidence is thin
Studies depend on experienced lucid dreamers, who are rare, self-selected and aware of what the experiment expects to find.
Blinding is essentially impossible, since a participant knows whether they practiced in a dream, and expectation influences performance on motor tasks.
Replication across independent laboratories is limited, which places these findings in the promising rather than the established category.
What can reasonably be said
Dreamed movement engages some of the same machinery as real movement, which is an interesting finding about dreaming regardless of any application.
Claims that lucid rehearsal substitutes for physical training go well beyond what has been shown and are made mostly in commercial and enthusiast settings.
Anyone attempting it should also weigh the cost, since the techniques used to induce lucidity involve interrupting sleep, and lost sleep degrades motor learning directly.
