The Problem Of Studying Something Only One Person Saw
Dreaming is the rare subject where the phenomenon is private by definition, which constrains how it can be measured and what counts as evidence within the field.

Most sciences study something two observers can look at together. Dreaming cannot be shared while it is happening, and that single fact shapes the whole discipline.
Why privacy is a methodological problem
An experimenter can watch the sleeping body and the recording of its brain, but the experience itself is available only to the sleeper and only afterwards, in reconstruction.
There is no independent check. If a report is inaccurate, incomplete or invented, nothing in the physiological record can settle the matter, because no one knows what the correct answer looks like.
This is not unique to dreams, since the same difficulty attends pain, mood and imagery. Dreaming is the extreme case because the reporter is unconscious during the event being reported.
How the field compensates
The main strategy is aggregation. Individual reports are unreliable in unknown ways, but patterns across thousands of them from many people are more stable than any single account.
Standardised coding systems make aggregation possible by turning free narrative into countable elements, so that questions about frequency and proportion can be asked at all.
Findings that survive this treatment, such as the predominance of familiar settings or the relative rarity of certain sensory modes, are the sturdiest things the field has.
Anchoring reports to physiology
The second strategy is to find places where a report can be checked against something measurable, however narrow that window is.
Correspondences between reported dream events and physiological traces recorded at the same time provide such anchors, since the sleeper cannot know what the equipment was registering.
Signalled communication from within lucid sleep took this furthest, letting a dreamer mark a moment with agreed eye movements so that report and recording could be aligned in time.
What the constraint rules out
Questions about what a dream means to the dreamer are not answerable by these methods, since meaning is not a property that can be independently verified.
Claims about dreams predicting events run into the same wall from the other side, because the report is usually made or refined after the event it supposedly anticipated.
Interpretive traditions, from ancient manuals to twentieth-century schools, operate outside this constraint entirely. They can be studied as traditions, which is a different task from testing them as claims.
Why the field still produces knowledge
Working under a hard limit is not the same as working without evidence. Astronomy cannot manipulate its objects either and manages a great deal by careful observation.
Dream research has established robust regularities in content, mapped how dreaming varies across the night and across the lifespan, and shown what happens to it in specific conditions.
The discipline's honesty about its raw material is a strength rather than an apology. The claims it makes are narrower than popular writing suggests, and correspondingly more likely to hold.
