Descriptions of lucid dreaming often emphasize sensory realism, with dreamers reporting that the experience is indistinguishable from waking. The distribution across the senses is considerably more uneven than that.

Vision and hearing dominate

Visual content is present in almost all dream reports, and lucid dreams are described as unusually vivid visually, sometimes more so than waking perception.

Sound appears in a large share of reports, including speech, music and environmental noise, and lucid dreamers frequently report deliberately listening to test the dream.

Both are the senses with the largest cortical representation, which offers at least a rough correspondence between what is dreamed and what the brain is built to process.

Touch is more available than expected

Tactile detail is reported more often in lucid dreams than in ordinary ones, though this may reflect that lucid dreamers deliberately reach out and touch things.

Rubbing the hands together is a standard technique for stabilizing a fading dream, which suggests that touch is both available and unusually engaging.

Pain is reported rarely and is usually described as muted, which is one of the more consistent observations across the practitioner literature.

Taste and smell stay thin

Both are reported in only a small fraction of dreams, lucid or otherwise, and lucid dreamers who deliberately attempt to taste food often describe a vague or absent sensation.

Where present, the descriptions are usually generic rather than specific, which contrasts with the detailed visual accounts from the same dreams.

Proposed explanations include the difficulty of describing these senses in language and the way memory for them resists deliberate retrieval, neither of which has been settled.

Why this matters for claims about realism

An experience that is visually and acoustically rich while chemically empty is not equivalent to waking perception, however convincing it feels at the time.

The felt realism is itself a product of the dream, since the dreamer's judgment about whether something seems real is generated by the same process producing the scene.

Marketing that promises complete sensory experiences is therefore promising something the reports do not describe.

How the senses behave under attention

Attending closely to a sensation frequently increases its detail, which practitioners use deliberately when a dream begins to lose definition.

The same attention can end the dream, since focusing too narrowly is a common trigger for waking, and the balance is the practical difficulty of stabilization.

This dependence on attention suggests dream detail is generated on demand rather than existing in the background, which fits reports that peripheral scenery is vague until examined.
