Daylight Saving Time And The Week After The Shift
The spring clock change costs an hour of sleep once, but the lasting effect is a mismatch between clock time and light that takes the body clock weeks to absorb.

The twice-yearly clock change is often described as losing or gaining an hour of sleep. The single night matters less than the months of altered light exposure that follow it.
The clock moves but the sun does not
Shifting clocks forward does not change when the sun rises. It changes the label attached to that moment, so an alarm now sounds an hour earlier in solar terms.
The circadian system is set by light, not by the number on a phone. It stays anchored to sunrise and sunset while social schedules jump ahead of it.
That gap between biological timing and social timing is what researchers mean by circadian misalignment. It persists as long as the offset does.
Why spring is harder than fall
Moving forward requires the body clock to advance, and advancing is the harder direction because the human circadian period runs slightly longer than twenty-four hours.
Falling back asks the clock to delay, which it does readily. Most people absorb the autumn change within a few days, aside from waking early for a while.
The spring shift also takes an hour of morning light and moves it to the evening, weakening the morning signal that does most of the work of advancing the clock.
The cost is spread, not concentrated
The lost hour is recovered quickly. What is not recovered quickly is the alignment, and a mismatched clock produces sleepiness at the wrong hours for weeks.
Effects fall unevenly. Late chronotypes, adolescents and shift workers begin the change already misaligned, so an additional hour of pressure lands hardest on them.
Western edges of United States time zones feel this more sharply than eastern edges, because the sun there already rises late relative to the clock before any change is applied.
Why the policy debate is about which fixed time
Much of the argument in state legislatures is no longer about whether to keep switching, but about which single setting to keep permanently.
Permanent daylight saving preserves late summer evenings and pushes winter sunrise very late in many regions. Permanent standard time keeps morning light and shortens summer evenings.
Sleep and circadian researchers have generally argued for the standard-time option on the grounds that morning light is the stronger timing signal, while retail and recreation interests have argued for evening daylight.
What actually eases the transition
Shifting bedtime and wake time gradually over several days before the change spreads the adjustment rather than concentrating it in one night.
Getting outside soon after waking in the days after the spring change supplies the morning light the schedule has just removed, which is the signal the clock responds to most strongly.
Sleep problems that persist well beyond the transition are unlikely to be caused by it, and are worth taking to a clinician rather than attributing to the calendar.
