Exercise, Body Heat And When To Train
Training raises core temperature and arousal, then leaves both falling for hours, which is why the timing of a workout affects sleep less than the folklore suggests.

Advice to avoid exercising in the evening has circulated for decades. The physiology behind it is real but the effect is smaller and more variable than the rule implies.
Sleep onset depends on losing heat
Core body temperature falls in the hours before sleep, and that decline is part of the signal that initiates sleep rather than a side effect of lying down.
Heat is lost by dilating blood vessels in the hands and feet, which is why warm extremities and a cooling core tend to accompany drowsiness.
Anything that raises core temperature works against that decline while it lasts. Exercise raises it substantially, which is the basis of the evening warning.
The rebound matters more than the rise
After training ends, core temperature does not simply return to baseline. It overshoots downward, dropping below where it started as heat dissipation continues.
That falling limb resembles the pre-sleep decline and may assist it. The timing question is therefore about whether the rise or the fall coincides with bedtime.
A hot bath produces a similar pattern for the same reason, which is why passive heating before bed is often described as sleep promoting rather than disruptive.
Arousal is a separate channel
Hard training raises heart rate, catecholamines and general alertness, and those return to baseline on their own schedule independent of temperature.
High-intensity work close to lights out is the case where sleep onset is most often delayed, and competitive athletes describe it more than recreational exercisers do.
Moderate activity in the evening rarely shows the same effect. The intensity and how close it sits to bedtime matter more than the hour on the clock.
What regular training does over weeks
Habitual exercise is associated with falling asleep faster and sleeping more soundly, and the association is more consistent than any finding about single sessions.
Part of that is direct and part is indirect: people who train regularly tend to keep more consistent schedules and get outdoors, which supplies daylight to the body clock.
Outdoor morning exercise combines both effects, delivering both physical load and the bright morning light that anchors circadian timing.
Where the rule should be discarded
Many people can only train in the evening, and skipping it in favor of protecting sleep trades a reliable benefit for a small and uncertain one.
The practical approach is to test it personally over a couple of weeks rather than to follow a blanket rule, since responses to evening training differ considerably.
Persistent difficulty sleeping that continues regardless of training schedule is a separate problem, and a clinician is the right person to sort out which one it is.
