Jet Lag Is Worse Flying East Than West

The body clock delays easily and advances reluctantly, so eastbound travel from the United States takes far longer to adjust to than the same number of time zones westbound.

Travelers consistently report that flying from New York to Europe hurts more than flying from New York to Hawaii. The asymmetry is real and follows from how the internal clock is built.

The internal day is slightly longer than twenty-four hours

Left without light cues, the human circadian system settles into a cycle a little longer than a day. It naturally drifts later, not earlier.

Daily light exposure corrects that drift each morning, pulling the clock back into line. The correction is small and routine, and most people never notice it happening.

Because the system already leans toward lateness, asking it to run later still is easy. Asking it to run earlier works against its own tendency.

Direction determines which adjustment is required

Flying west lengthens the day. Bedtime arrives later in local terms, which is the direction the clock prefers, so adaptation tends to be quick.

Flying east shortens the day and demands a phase advance. The traveler must fall asleep and wake at what the body still considers the middle of the night.

A rough working figure used in travel medicine is around a day of adjustment per time zone eastward and rather less westward, though individuals vary widely.

Light can help or make it worse

Light shifts the clock in opposite directions depending on when it lands relative to the body's own low point in core temperature, which occurs shortly before habitual waking.

Light in the hours after that low point advances the clock. Light in the hours before it delays the clock, which is why exposure at the wrong time deepens the problem.

After an eastbound flight, bright morning light at the destination often arrives before the traveler's internal low point has passed, pushing the clock the wrong way for the first day or two.

Why symptoms are more than sleepiness

Digestion, alertness, body temperature and hormone release each run on the same clock, and they do not all shift at the same rate after a flight.

That internal desynchrony explains why jet lag includes stomach upset and a foggy, unfocused quality rather than simple tiredness that a nap would fix.

The systems reassemble over days, and the recovery is uneven, which is why day three of a trip can feel worse than day two.

What travelers can control

Shifting sleep timing slightly toward the destination in the days before departure reduces the size of the shift left to make on arrival.

Choosing when to seek and avoid daylight after landing matters more than anything done on the plane, because light is the input the clock actually reads.

Frequent long-haul crews live with permanent partial misalignment, and anyone in that situation who develops persistent insomnia has a reason to see a sleep specialist rather than manage it alone.
